Unboxing Your Trézor® Device

Authenticity and Security

Before you begin, it’s crucial to verify that your Trézor® device is authentic and untampered. Your device will arrive in a sealed box bearing the official Trézor® holographic seal and branding. Inspect the package carefully for any signs of tampering or damage.

Always purchase Trézor® devices from official vendors or the Trézor® website to avoid counterfeit products that may compromise your security.

Keep all these components safe as you proceed with the setup.

Connecting Your Trézor® Device

Step 1: Plug in Your Device

Connect your Trézor® device to your computer or compatible smartphone using the supplied USB cable. Upon connection, the device screen will illuminate, prompting you to visit https://trezor.io/start.

Step 2: Install Trézor Bridge

To allow your computer to communicate with the Trézor® device, install the Trézor Bridge software available on the start page. Trézor Bridge is essential for secure data transfer between your hardware wallet and your computer.

Follow the installation instructions specific to your operating system, and restart your browser once installed.

Initializing Your Trézor® Wallet

Firmware Update

To ensure optimal security and functionality, your Trézor® device may prompt you to update its firmware. Firmware updates are cryptographically signed and validated, guaranteeing the integrity and security of your device.

Always accept and apply firmware updates when prompted. Avoid using devices with outdated firmware, as they may lack critical security enhancements.

Creating a New Wallet

If this is your first time using a Trézor®, select the option to create a new wallet. During this process, your device will generate a 24-word recovery seed phrase. This seed phrase is the key to your wallet and all its assets.

Write down the recovery seed words carefully on the provided recovery card. Ensure the words are spelled correctly and recorded in the exact order displayed. Store this card securely, offline, and never share it digitally or with anyone.

Recovering an Existing Wallet

If you are upgrading or replacing an existing wallet, choose the “Recover wallet” option. You will be prompted to enter your existing recovery seed phrase. This restores your wallet and access to your assets securely on your new device.

Setting Up Security Features

Configuring Your PIN

To protect your device from unauthorized access, set up a PIN code. This PIN must be entered on the device itself, preventing malware or keyloggers on your computer from stealing it.

Choose a strong PIN that balances memorability with complexity. Avoid simple sequences or common numbers.

Enabling Passphrase Protection

For advanced security, Trézor® allows you to add a passphrase — an additional word or phrase that acts as a “25th word” to your recovery seed. This passphrase creates a hidden wallet, adding another layer of protection.

Note that losing your passphrase means losing access to any wallet protected by it. Use this feature only if you are confident in securely managing your passphrase.

Backup and Recovery Best Practices

Your recovery seed is the ultimate backup. Store it in a secure, offline location, ideally in a waterproof and fireproof safe. Avoid storing it on electronic devices or cloud services.

Consider creating multiple copies stored in different secure locations for redundancy.
